How to grow an avocado from a seed. Step by step instructions

The first sprouts will appear in 3-4 weeks.

The tropical avocado tree grows in many countries around the world. These include Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Peru, Indonesia, and Colombia. In plantations, avocados can grow to a height of up to 25 meters, yet they are quite suitable for growing at home on a windowsill. The disadvantage is that you have to wait quite a long time, about three years, for the first harvest. On the plus side, avocado leaves oxygenate the room and eliminate harmful gases.

In general, it is not difficult to grow your own avocado - you need to follow some rules.

Only a ripe fruit should be used as a seed. You can choose between green and Hass avocado varieties. Depending on what you like. Check that the avocado has no damage or dents - it should look normal on the outside.

Remove the pit, take three toothpicks and pierce the pit along the "equator" at an equal distance on three sides. Do not damage the core.

Take a container (such as a glass bottle), fill it with water. Place the avocado on toothpicks, blunt side down. The water should cover 1/3 of the pit. Make sure the water stays at the same level every day.

After 3-4 weeks you will see the first sprouts. When they are about 3 cm high, the avocado should be transplanted into the ground. Take a pot, fill it with soil and put it on a window sill or any place with good light. Plant the avocado in the ground by making a hole in the ground and water gently.

Watch the avocado regularly. Do not let the soil dry out, maintain a temperature of at least +20°C, and fertilize.
